What a time we are living in! Chaos seems to reign. So how do we, those of us who are intentionally connected with the Holy, live and live well in this unprecedented time? How might the Divine fit into our lives when we feel battered around by the many things that are happening around the world?
Each of us will find our own spiritual paths to navigate this time of uncertainty. But for those of us who aren’t sure which path to take, Cynthia Bourgeault provides some guidance.
The video “An Audience with Cynthia Bourgeault” was filmed in February 2024, but her prophetic words are remarkably apt for today: https://youtu.be/v6gXjBulSPY
I invite you to contemplatively listen to Cynthia’s voice. It is my prayer that her words might support you as you make your next right step in discerning how to live out your spirituality in this time.
For those of you who don’t have time to listen to the entire video, a key moment is at minute nineteen when Cynthia recommends that we develop three skills to assist us in finding the “eternal truth amid chaos.”
Here’s my very rudimentary explanation of these skills:
• Hearing a basic pulse through everything. Cynthia gives a demonstration of hand drumming to listen for and experience this basic pulse. I often find this pulse as I focus on my breathing or watch the ocean waves.
• Developing an awareness of knowing when to stand back, withdraw, and/or act. Also learning how to act with the right force and timing.
• Developing what she calls “impartiality.” This is like developing a witness stance so that we can stand in the face of great tragedy, loss, chaos and grief without being "taken apart."
Over the next while, the "Spirituality for Chaotic Times" blogs will invite you into various spiritual practices for this chaotic time. Some will have videos that will guide you into reflections, prayers, chants, and other practices. This brief welcome video gives more information about what's coming.
This blog is dedicated to the memory of Maureen Fowler,
